Prof. Ahmed El-Kased, President of Menoufia University, announced that Lt. Gen. Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, honored Menoufia University as the first Egyptian university to obtain the carbon footprint report issued by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality. The recognition took place during the celebration of World Standards Day, organized by the Organization for Standardization and Quality in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Office in Egypt, with support from the EU-funded Trade Programme.
The Shield of Recognition and Certificate were received on behalf of the University by Prof. Sobhy Sharaf, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Khaled Sefy, President of the Organization for Standardization and Quality and President of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO); Dr. Gehan Bayoumi, Deputy Representative of UNIDO in Egypt; representatives of the European Union Delegation to Egypt; as well as a distinguished group of experts in standards, quality, and accreditation, in addition to representatives of several industrial companies and governmental bodies.
Prof. Ahmed El-Kased expressed his profound pride in this exceptional achievement, noting that the University’s recognition represents a culmination of its continuous efforts to implement environmental sustainability standards and measure carbon emissions in alignment with Egypt’s green transition vision and sustainable development goals. He emphasized that the University consistently works to enhance its environmental and research infrastructure in ways that contribute to emission reduction and strengthen its role in community service.
Lt. Gen. Kamel El-Wazir commended the University’s pioneering step, affirming that it stands as a model to be emulated among Egyptian higher education institutions in terms of advancing environmental sustainability and applying international quality standards. He emphasized this during the presentation of the honorary shield at a ceremony that witnessed broad participation from governmental entities, academic institutions, and representatives of UN and EU organizations, underscoring the pivotal role of standards and quality in supporting industrial development and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian institutions.
The Deputy Prime Minister stated that this achievement reflects advanced institutional awareness of the importance of the green transition and the adoption of sustainability standards. He added that the preparation of carbon footprint reports constitutes a pivotal step in measuring emissions and formulating reduction strategies in alignment with the State’s orientation toward a green economy and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. He praised the University’s efforts in applying environmental quality standards and promoting the culture of resource conservation.
The University President extended his appreciation to Prof. Sobhy Sharaf, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, for his distinguished leadership of the team responsible for preparing the carbon footprint report and for his effective coordination with the Organization for Standardization and Quality. He also commended the notable cooperation demonstrated by the participating team members from various faculties and administrative units, affirming that they presented an exemplary model of teamwork that contributed to achieving this milestone, which elevates the University’s standing both nationally and academically.
Prof. Sobhy Sharaf expressed his great pride in the University’s recognition as the first educational institution to receive a carbon footprint report from the Organization for Standardization and Quality. He highlighted that this accomplishment is the outcome of sustained efforts within the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector to promote a culture of sustainability and implement practical plans for measuring and reducing emissions. He added that the Sector has worked to raise environmental awareness across faculties and administrative departments, applying rigorous mechanisms for monitoring resource consumption and improving the efficiency of their use. He also extended his gratitude to Prof. Ahmed El-Kased, President of the University, for his continuous encouragement and full support, which enabled the Sector to achieve this distinguished success.
