The institute announced the results of a specialized research study (PhD thesis) presented by researcher Ghadir Saeed Khalil Mohamed, which evaluated the “extrahepatic Glissonean approach” in right lobe donor hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation and assessed its impact on surgical outcomes compared with conventional techniques. The study included 22 liver donors and recipients who underwent liver transplantation at the institute between 2022 and 2024. It was supervised by a distinguished panel of senior professors at the institute: Tarek Ibrahim Hesham Abdel Dayem Islam Ayoub Mahmoud Makshat The study findings demonstrated that the “extrahepatic Glissonean approach” is a safe and effective alternative to the conventional method. No statistically significant differences were observed in morbidity or mortality rates between the two groups, highlighting the safety of the new technique and its ability to isolate blood vessels and bile ducts without damaging liver tissue. The study also recommended expanding future research on larger patient populations and enhancing specialized surgical training on this advanced technique in order to minimize potential risks and maximize benefits related to donor safety and surgical efficiency. In this context, Osama Hegazy stated: “This scientific research comes within the framework of the institute’s strategy to advance surgical protocols in a way that ensures the highest levels of safety for both donors and patients. We are proud that the National Liver Institute not only provides medical services, but also actively contributes to enriching global scientific research through the innovation and adoption of surgical techniques such as the ‘Glissonean approach,’ which has demonstrated high efficiency and safety in this study, thereby improving the success rates of liver transplantation procedures and reducing biliary complications.” Share
