Prof. Ahmed El-Kased, President of Menoufia University, witnessed the signing ceremony of the design contract for the expansion of the University’s Oncology Institute, which includes the construction of the North Building, the upgrading of the South Building, and the development of the general site of the University Hospitals. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Sobhi Sharaf, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Nasser Abdel-Bary, Vice President for Education and Students’ Affairs; and Prof. Ekramy Gamal, University Secretary-General.
The contract was signed by Prof. Ahmed Sabry, Dean of the Oncology Institute, and Dr. Hany El-Hashemy, Director of El-Hashemy Engineering Consultancy. The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Mohamed Saafan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Prof. Essam Hilal, Engineering Advisor to the University President.
The University President emphasized that this project represents a strategic step towards realizing the University’s vision of providing distinguished medical services and supporting the State’s efforts to advance the healthcare sector and improve citizens’ quality of life. The expansion of the Oncology Institute reflects the University’s commitment to upgrading medical and therapeutic services for oncology patients, and to providing an integrated healthcare environment in accordance with the latest international standards. This will help ease the burdens on patients and their families in Menoufia Governorate and neighboring governorates.
Prof. El-Kased noted that these expansions constitute a continuation of the Oncology Institute’s development, aiming to provide comprehensive services for cancer diagnosis and treatment in line with the latest global protocols, while equipping the Institute with the most advanced medical devices and technologies to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. He further explained that this project represents the first stage in the establishment of Menoufia University Medical City.
He stressed that these new facilities are not merely an addition to the healthcare infrastructure but an investment in community health through the provision of specialized care and the promotion of scientific research. This initiative is aligned with the directives of the Egyptian State and political leadership, under the guidance of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to expand specialized medical centers, develop university hospitals, and implement the Universal Health Insurance System, which aims to achieve nationwide health coverage according to the highest standards of quality.
During the meeting, the University President discussed with the project team the essential preparations for the construction of the North Building and the required designs for developing the general site, covering an area of 10 feddans, to enhance the University Hospitals. He stressed the importance of adhering to both engineering and medical standards in the design, ensuring comfort and safety for patients and staff alike. The project will include the latest medical devices, specialized oncology units, and state-of-the-art research laboratories to support scientific studies in this vital field. The objective, he clarified, is not only to provide treatment but also to establish a holistic therapeutic and humanitarian environment that considers the psychological and social dimensions of patients and their families, making the Institute a pioneering model for comprehensive medical and humanitarian services.
Prof. El-Kased also underscored the importance of setting a clear timeline for implementing all project phases, affirming that the University will closely monitor each stage to ensure completion within the scheduled timeframe.
For his part, Prof. Ahmed Sabry stated that the purpose of the contract is to prepare comprehensive designs for the expansion project of the Oncology Institute, providing all facilities in accordance with technical specifications, health requirements, and international quality standards. The project aspires to transform the Institute into a distinguished center for integrated therapeutic and preventive oncology care, scientific research, and advanced training. It will provide opportunities for medical and research professionals to innovate, producing pioneering scientific studies that benefit patients and society—an important step towards a healthier future.
Prof. Essam Hilal, Engineering Advisor to the University President, added that the contract also covers the development of the general site of the Medical City and other facilities to be established, aiming to create a fully integrated medical complex for healthcare, education, and research. The Medical City is designed to accommodate the increasing number of patients and to provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services using the latest international medical technologies.
It is worth noting that the Institute currently comprises seven specialized departments: Pediatric Oncology and Hematological Malignancies, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology, Tumor Biology, Medical Statistics and Cancer Epidemiology, and Palliative Care. The planned expansion aims to increase the Institute’s capacity to 400 inpatient beds, 40 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, and 40 intermediate care beds, in addition to six operating rooms, 100 chemotherapy chairs, and four radiotherapy units.
The Institute also offers Master’s degrees in Medical Oncology and Hematology, Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Cancer Epidemiology and Control, Pediatric Oncology and Hematology, and Palliative Medicine; as well as Doctoral degrees in Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology and Hematology, Radiation Oncology, Tumor Biology, Cancer Epidemiology and Control, and Nuclear Medicine.
