Prof. Ahmed Elkased, Menofia University President and Oncology Professor, performed a delicate and complicated surgery for a patient at the Cancer Institute, who is suffering from a cancerous tumor of the jaw. Prof. Elkased headed a surgical team that included Prof. Hossam Alful, Dean of the university's Cancer Institute; Oncology Prof. Ahmed Sabry; and Dr. Abdulaziz Sakr, Assist. Prof. of Oncology. The surgery was witnessed by Prof. Salah Hegazy, Dean of Faculty of Dentistry; and a number of physicians at the faculty; in line with the cooperation protocol between the Faculty and the Institute. This protocol presents an integrated model for care of cancer patients, especially those who suffer from facial or jaws tumors, and whose chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment would require an intervention to enhance oral health.
Prof. Ahmed Elkased explained that during the surgery a tumor at the end of the lower jaw was removed, as well as the lower jaw; while the lymph nodes in the neck were uprooted. A muscle slice from the chest was used in facial reconstruction.
Mandibulectomy is a major surgery that requires precise surgical techniques to guarantee the best outcome; and it poses a challenge in surgical oncology as it combines anatomical accuracy and functional beauty. The success of this surgery confirms that Menofia University Cancer Institute is competitive with the biggest centers specialized in maxillofacial surgeries.
The University President said that this surgery represents a development in the field of maxillofacial surgeries, a model of cooperation between different medical specializations, and a glimpse of hope for patients who would need such complicated interventions. He also stated that the patient is stable and is being monitored round the clock. He added that the patient will begin a rehabilitation program that includes speech therapy, physiotherapy, and psychological follow up. The President commended the medical team at the Institute, and pointed out that the Faculty of Dentistry at Menofia University will take part in the patient's jaw rehabilitation and the dental fixtures he might need post-op.
Prof. Elkased stated that Menofia University Cancer Institute is an integrated medical center for cancer treatment and related specialized surgeries. It is a cornerstone in the medical care system, as it plays a decisive role in diagnosing and treating cancerous diseases through the most recent medical and surgical means, and by offering an integrated treatment for patients via accurate diagnosis of cases with the help of the most recent advanced technologies; comprehensive treatment programs (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy) under one roof; and regular patient follow-up for best health results. The Institute also provides advanced treatments and microsurgeries for cancer patients, which contributes to curative ratios and enhances quality of life.

Prof. Hossam Alful, Dean of the Cancer Institute, added that the Institute hosts an elite of physicians and surgeons who perform tumor removal surgeries with the finest precision, a surgical team specialized in different types of tumors, as well as anaesthetists and post operative care teams, for a secure  patient recovery. The Institute also aims to develop surgical methods through clinical research, in collaboration with specialized centers, to train young physicians on the most recent technologies in the field of surgical oncology. The Dean asserted that the Institute is a cornerstone in medical and research efforts to fight cancer.
